Hi there! I’m Francesca
Varela, a freelance copy
editor and the author of
four environmental
novels—Call of the Sun
Child, Listen, The Seas
of Distant Stars, and
Blue Mar. My two biggest
passions have always been
writing and the
environment, so it’s no
surprise that I became an
environmental writer.
I grew up on the suburban
outskirts of Portland,
Oregon, where my
backyard was a forest. I
spent my childhood out
there, befriending owls,
playing beneath ancient
cedar trees, and
developing a deeply
rooted sense of place. My
writing is informed by this
lifelong love of nature, and
by my environmental
education, which includes
an M.A. in environmental
humanities from the
University of Utah and a
B.A. in environmental
studies (with a minor in
creative writing!) from the
University of Oregon.
In addition to being a
writer myself, I’m also a
freelance copy editor who
works primarily with indie
authors. My goal is to
bring out the best in my
clients’ writing. I work
with them to smooth out
their prose, fix
grammatical errors, and
catch inconsistencies that
are easy to overlook. I’m
so proud of my clients,
most of whom have gone
on to publish their books.
Check out the editing
page for some of their
testimonials!
In my free time, I also run
a website called The Indie
Bookstore Search, which is
an online directory of all
the independent
bookstores in the
American West. This is a
great tool for indie authors
who are planning events
and trying to get their
books stocked in stores!

BEHIND THE SCENES
Meet Cashew, my writing
assistant! Her role is to
provide emotional support
and cuddles. I adopted
Cashew from the Oregon
Humane Society in
2021, and since then
we’ve spent almost all of
our time together.
Cashew loves playing with
her carrot toy, going for
walkies, swimming in the
river, and playing with her
corgi-cousin, Basil. For
updates on Cashew, check
out my Instagram page!

MY NOVELS
My dream of becoming an
author began in third grade,
and my writing career had
an early start; I wrote my
first book, Call of the Sun
Child, when I was only 18.
When not writing or
reading, I usually spend my
time playing piano, figure
skating, drawing, hiking,
kayaking, doing yoga,
spending time with Cashew,
and exploring Oregon’s wild
places.

poetry, visit my blog, All
the Winds of the World,
